Critical Creative Reflection

  1. How does your product use or challenge conventions AND how does it represent social groups or issues?

  2. How does your product engage with audiences AND how would it be distributed as a real media text?

  3. How did your production skills develop throughout this project?

  4. How did you integrate technologies – software, hardware and online – in this project?

My product uses the concept of dreams and the state of mind one has to be in. Since dreams are seen as a good and peaceful moment, I made my own twist in it and created a more strange atmosphere to it. I also used a person to represent internal conflict. No matter what you do, your problems will come back and get you, even when your mind is at ease. Once a person realizes and faces their problem, it will send them back into reality, finally aware of their situation. In my project, the ending included a light source, which represents a light of hope or a path for a better future. This represents a majority of people due to everyone’s struggle to go head-on with their problems. Whether their issues deal with things such as society, finance, or school. Regardless, it is hard for people to keep owning up and dealing with their problems, and they tend to push it away and immerse themselves into a fantasy world to cope with it. It may be difficult for them, but their issues will sooner or later come flying at them. Once it becomes severe and they have to face it head-on, the fantasy comes crashing down, which will bring an abrupt ending to the make-believe safety and security of a dream. While it may feel like it’ll last forever, it will only be a temporary solution to your issues. As I mentioned before, there will always be a light to guide you.

It engages the audience by showing a contrast to the dark and dim reality, versus the bright and vibrant imagination. It will bring more attention to the dream, which is the main point since people tend to look at what they want to see, not the whole picture. Also, in the end, it shows a sliver of light that will bring the audience’s attention to it. Like a moth, I direct people’s attention to the areas I want them to see with the contrast of light and dark. This will create a balance of values and will give the audience more to pay attention to. If I had not manipulated the light, it would not have the same emphasis and meaning, and my film would be unassuming and will bore the audience. It should be seen as a promotional video to spread awareness, and it should be distributed across different social media platforms. This is because it is easy to understand and follow with the story and message it is trying to send. It also can throw people into a loop if they closely relate to this topic, and will stick in their minds. This video will be able to give the audience a friendly reality check, just to let the people know there will always be a way out of their struggles. In the end, they will see the light and it will give them a sign to keep pushing and they will be in the light again.

My skills definitely increased and were tested throughout the entire production. First, it definitely helped with my planning phase. Since I almost never plan before creating something and just go head-on. So, this helped me take a moment and write down everything I wanted to do and manage my time and efforts in a good span of days. However, it did test me on my patience, since I do tend to go do things spontaneously. It took a lot of restraint to skip or cut the planning short and just go through filming without a clear view of what I wanted. Next, it really helped with my filming skills. This is due to me not really filming or having the need to. So, I never really got around to learning how to properly record. But, with this film, I was able to learn all of the different types of shots and recreate them in my production. It definitely helped with my understanding and guided me through when I filmed with my sister. However, it did come with its struggles, since I had to also be in the film. It was challenging to guide my sister to how I wanted the clips to look like. It took a bit, but I was able to get the shots how I wanted it to look. When it came to editing, it definitely made me get out of my comfort zone and made me experiment with the different controls in the app. Regardless, it helped me get cleaner transitions between clips.

In the beginning, I used my phone to find the song I wanted to use for my film. Then, I used it to help me find inspiration and things related to the genre of the song I wanted to use. I also used my phone to record and film using the camera app. To keep track of time and stay on track, I used the reminders app to keep up with my tight schedule. I also used that app to make solid plans with my sister to film on days we were both free. While I was filming, I used fairy lights to have a resemblance to the stars in my film. I also used red LED lights to give off unsettling and dangerous vibes. Since red is associated with danger and negative emotions, I used that to portray reality. I then used a closet light to resemble a hope and light to a brighter future. Once I was done with that, I used the app CapCut to fully edit and splice all of my clips into a whole music video. I then went on Safari, and searched on YouTube to add the song into my video. Then, I made sure to line up the audio with my clips, adjusting it as I went. After I finished editing my film, I transferred the video to my laptop, where I uploaded the video onto YouTube so I could embed it into my blog.
